Among Chief of Scouts, John Lapham Bullis is not well known outside of San Antonio, Texas but his record proves him to be one of the finest. Known by his adversaries as “The Whirlwind,” by his beloved Seminole-Negro Scouts as “Thunderbolt’” and by General Stanley as “The most successful Indian fighter in the history of the American Army . . “,Captain Bullis, a veteran of the Civil War, re-joined the Army during the Indian campaigns as an infantry Lieutenant. As such he became Chief of Scouts and fought alongside the Seminole-Negro Scouts from Fort Clark, Texas. Bullis lead his beloved scouts and other infantry and Cavalry units up and down the Rio Grande for nearly a decade. He commanded one of the longest scouts on record when in 1879, he trailed a renegade band of Apaches for 80-days covering some 1200 miles. He received numerous awards and commemorative swords from the citizens of Texas. Bullis served in the Spanish American War and in the Philippines Insurrection before retiring as a Brigadier General.
